Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) President Dr. Maureen Murphy announced today during her final holiday message to employees that Â鶹ֱ²¥ will close Friday, Dec. 23, 2022, extending employee’s Winter Break an extra day. The announcement follows Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s lead declaring Dec. 23 a state holiday this year.
The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) is included on the Intelligent.com’s list of the Best Community Colleges in Maryland for 2023 and was declared to have the “Best Faculty” in the state. This designation came one week after Â鶹ֱ²¥ was named as one of the “Top Online” colleges in Maryland by the same ranking resource. In that separate announcement, Intellingent.com ranked Â鶹ֱ²¥ 15th out of 18 college and universities in the state to earn the “Top Online” designation and was the only community college on the list.
The faculty and staff of the Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) joined the families and friends of 23 Adult Education Program graduates Nov. 16 to celebrate the students for returning to school and earning their Maryland high school diploma.

Paul Barnhart Elementary School fifth grader Kayshawn Woodman said he aspires to go into business with his parents’ companies. The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) will lease its former St. Charles Children’s Learning Center (CLC) to Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) to add additional availability for full-day prekindergarten programing in Charles County. Under the agreement unanimously approved by the Â鶹ֱ²¥ Board of Trustees at its Nov. 17 monthly meeting, CCPS will lease the CLC for two years starting Jan. 1, 2023 with an option for two additional years after June 2026.

The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) announces that Chief of Staff Larisa Pfeiffer has been elected to serve the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Professional Board Staff Network (PBSN) as its president. In this capacity, Pfeiffer will provide leadership to all four of the network’s regions, represent and coordinate the work of the PBSN, and serve as the network’s liaison to ACCT.

The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) is profoundly saddened to share that three Â鶹ֱ²¥ students were involved in the tragic murder-suicide that occurred in La Plata Nov. 4. This is a tragedy that is felt by our entire community, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those impacted. Our hearts are heavy and the Â鶹ֱ²¥ family is grieving. We will make every effort to help our students, staff and faculty cope with this tremendous loss.
The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Yolanda Wilson as the college’s sixth president following an extensive nationwide search. The board voted unanimously in support of Wilson’s appointment during a public meeting held Nov. 3. Wilson will become the first African-American president to lead the college in its 64-year-history.
Artist and former Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) Adjunct Art Professor Dr. Margaret Dowell will return to the La Plata Campus tomorrow, Nov. 4, to share her artistic view of her family's 300-year-old Calvert County farm. Her art exhibition kicks off with Dowell hosting a gallery talk at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building at 2 p.m.

The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) Board of Trustees announced today that after an extensive nationwide search, three finalists have been named as candidates to become the next president of the college. Â鶹ֱ²¥’s current president Dr. Maureen Murphy announced earlier this year that she will enter retirement Dec. 31, 2022 after a lauded 35-year career dedicated to community colleges, students and equity.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan appointed Cathy Allen, of St. Mary’s County, to serve the Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) as trustee, effective July 1, 2018 through 2023. Allen replaces Trustee Dr. John W. Roache, who retired from the board in April 2022.

Beloved Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) Professor Carolin McManus was honored posthumously by her colleagues and the Â鶹ֱ²¥ Board of Trustees with the title of Professor Emeritus by a unanimous vote during the trustees’ September meeting. McManus died in a tragic underwater diving accident off Newfoundland July 27 while performing research on the SS PLM 27 shipwreck as a member of the Battle of the Atlantic Research and Expedition Group.
Two international experts on trauma recently spoke to the Southern Maryland community on the psychological wounds and ripple effects that racism and racial trauma inflict on individuals and their communities—and the need for healing at the personal and collective level.
As part of the One Maryland One Book state-wide program, author Naima Coster will speak at a free public event Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Â鶹ֱ²¥ La Plata Campus Fine Arts Center. This program will also include 30-40 minutes of interview-style discussion with Ashley Teagle, CEO of the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association, followed by 15-20 minutes of audience Q&A. Naima Coster will sign books after she speaks.
Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) graduates who have chosen to pursue careers in health care were recognized Sept. 16 surrounded by their family, friends and professors at a Health Career Readiness Recognition ceremony.
The Â鶹ֱ²¥ (Â鶹ֱ²¥) celebrated the induction of 10 nursing students into Alpha Omega, Â鶹ֱ²¥’s chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society. The nursing students selected for this honor earned Bs or better in their nursing courses without repeating the courses and completed a scholarly project related to the advancement of nursing as a profession.
